Revenues
Revenue also called fiscal or tax stamps are stamps used to designate collected taxes and fees. They were never intended for mailing letters but were instead affixed to items or documents proving that the appropriate tax was paid either for tangible goods or services. The United States Government issued its first revenue stamp in 1862 to help defray cost of the Civil War. There are two main types of revenue stamps — Documentary which are for legal papers, stock transfers and certificates, and Proprietary which are for commercial goods like matches, cosmetics, medicines, wines, beers, playing cards, etc. The US stopped requiring Documentary stamps on December 31, 1967, although still requiring some Proprietary stamps on Firearms.
