Plate Number Coils

Plate Number Coils

Similar to the plate blocks, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving used identification numbers on the bottom of coil stamps. Starting with Scott 1891, these numbers were intentionally left on the stamp. Prior to this, plate numbers were intentionally removed during the coiling process. Spacing between numbers varies between five and fifty-two stamps depending on the printer and which press was used. These are normally collected in strips of five with the plate number on the middle stamp. In cases where there is more than one design on an issue, the correct number of stamps for a proper plate numbered coil (PNC) can be up to twenty-one stamps as it is for Scott 3801a.
